Artist Statement
Today's visual world moves fast, possibly too fast. Branding, advertising, fashion, etc. are constantly changing in an effort to keep up with what's new, innovative, and on-trend. Out with the old, in with the new happens on an almost daily basis. As a graphic designer, I've done my fair share of trend-chasing and witnessed it firsthand. In my artwork, I'm interested in slowing things down and taking another look at both the physical and digital remains of discarded visual culture.
Working with different media and found materials, I create compositions that include imagery, iconography, patterns, and typography. These works are my way of observing, addressing, and trying to make sense of personal, family, and cultural identities. I aim to elevate materials that are generally overlooked and discarded in daily life to a level that engages the viewer to take another look and think of them differently. Additionally, I employ characters, logos, and religious iconography as part of a visual language and metaphor for my interactions and associations with them, while at the same time referencing their culturally established significance.
